about

Jon Ransom Portland, Oregon

Jon Ransom started playing guitar and writing songs at age 18, and over the course of a decade, has amassed an arsenal of songs ranging from quiet, contemplative tunes to anthemic folk rock ballads. No-frills, heart-on-your-sleeve, pure, unadulterated honest music. It's personal, intense yet fragile, and prone to bouts of incendiary cacophonies of melody and harmony. ... more

Track Name: Worn Out Joy
Along this path called life
there are many turns to take, and choices to make
Some people call it destiny others may call it fate,
but whichever you say I don't believe in either one.
But one thing I am certain is right
that there's a war to fight
between the shadows and the light.

There are those who only come to hurt, kill and destroy.
Others will come to heal the lost, sick and the blind,
And when those hard rains do fall, please keep this in mind,
I have heard "Sorrow is only worn out joy."

The party starts at eight, will I see ya?
The party starts at eight, are you coming?
Track Name: Crooked Wing
I spy you hiding from me
High above perched in your tree
Thinking ever so cleverly that I cannot see
It's your heart you follow it sets you free

Spread your wings, took to flight
Caught a draft, carried you high
Far above the skyline, you lost sight
of the home you love so warm and bright

Found you laid softly on the ground
Crooked wing, bandage wrapped around
I crept up slowly not daring make a sound
Heard you sing so sweetly at last you are found
Track Name: Torches
No I will not keep silent not for your sake
Nothing can hold me down now, not my mistakes

Fire's been kindled, torches are burning
Ship's a-blazing, no plans on returning

Stop me if you think you've heard this all before
You can't hold me down or back not no more

You won't ever stand in my way that's for sure
You won't hold me down like you did before
Track Name: Oh Lord, How I Know
I am walking, ever walking near the sea
My dear Angel she is beside me
I know, oh Lord, how I know
Her song I hear, her wings I see
As soft as a sparrow, she floats o'er me

I am sailing, ever sailing along the sea
The song my Sweet Angel sings beckons me
I know, oh Lord, how I know
Her love I seek, her heart will be
As soft as a dove, she floats above me

Oh Lord, oh Lord, I know what's true
When love comes a-callin', what's a man to do?
What are the words I will choose to use?
Soften my tongue, may your glory shine through
Track Name: After the Stars...
After the stars have receded back into the night
And the moon's has stolen away its light
I confessed what it was I'd buried out of sight
A feeling I knew in my head was not right
I'll say and do and think how I want to
Even though I know I'll have to kick and scream and fight
It will all be all right, all right, all right

When the words we used have faded to black
And the insults to injury have lost their effect
I obsessed over what it was I thought lacked
A feeling that grew after years of neglect
I'll say and do and think and act how I want to
Either way I know I'll have to kick and scream and fight
But it will all be all right, all right, all right
Track Name: A Hurricane
Pack up my clothes see where the wind blows
Hit the road, who knows where it goes
Fell in love with a hurricane
Almost drove me insane

Fell in love with a trainwreck
'Bout nearly broke my own neck
I'm a heart breakin' disaster
Hurt your feelings apologized after

Fell in love with a hurricane
Tell me when it comes 'round again

Nobody knows, nobody knows
Where the wind, where the wind blows
Nobody knows, nobody knows,
Where the road, where the road goes
Track Name: Stage Fright
I have trouble dreaming in the night,
I can't explain why that is
N' I got rid of my stage fright
long enough to sing you this
I don't think I need my head checked,
It's far too broken anyway
But I know all the words you were gonna say
Save your breath for another day

You don't even know me!
At least the way you think you do!

N' I can't dream in the night time
It ain't the right time for me (apparently!)
'Cause I sleep better in the day light
I can't fight what my body wants to do with me
Track Name: The Alchemist
If I were an alchemist, I'd purify your dirty heart,
Fuse your mind with your soul, use this science as an art
If I were an alchemist, I'd burn out your impurities
Separate all the bad, separate all the bad and good properties

Individuation is my inspiration
This transmutation is an aberration
A debased amalgamation, your final spiritualization

The great work is you
The triumph of the work is you

It's our chemical, chemical, chemical
Chemical, chemical, chemical wedding

If I were an alchemist, I'd cure us of our diseases
No more corruption, no more corruption please!
If I were an alchemist, I'd recombinate your doubt
Turn it wild against itself, joyously we will shout!

Heart of yours, heart of mine
May they never be corrupted!
Two souls into one cannot be wrested

It's our chemical, chemical, chemical
Chemical, chemical, chemical
Chemical, chemical, chemical wedding
Track Name: Far & Wide
What gives you the right to hold me down
Don’t think for one second you’re any better than me
I have searched far and wide and I didn’t find
No I didn’t find anyone around
In this desert heat I could not see the shade of your tree
Let me have one drink please
Track Name: 'Til the Night Fades Away
What oh what would you say?
When trouble comes your way?
How could you prepare for that day

You can clasp your hands and pray
Pray for the right words to say

There's a right or wrong there's a choice
Do the blind see does a mute have a voice?
Can a broken string still make any noise?

You can clap your hands and rejoice
Rejoice 'til the night fades away
'Til the night fades away
